My working technique in Abstract I, Abstract II, and Ethereal Mist was to use tape to mask out shapes as I painted the watercolor washes, removing and reapplying tape as I built up the color. I was thinking "landscape" as I painted. I wanted to express the feel of land, sky, and water. I introduced strong vertical shapes to counteract the soft transparent horizontal washes.
In Waterscape I, the shapes, colors, and forms made me think of an underwater landscape.

I did not do any masking in Abstract III and Abstract IV, and I painted with more vibrant colors, including adding gold watercolor paint as a decorative embellishment. To me, these two paintings also express the feel of sky and water.
In Abstract V and Abstract VI I wanted to paint a starker, more dramatic look, with few colors, though still "landscape" in feel.

In Ocean Swell I, Ocean Swell II, and Ocean Swell III, I wanted to express the feeling of powerful, surging waves.
In Abstract IX, the opaque nature of gouache led me to use a more "painterly" approach, layering colors and using black to create a dramatic contrast. I liked being able to apply light colors over dark colors, which is something you can't do very well in watercolor without risking having it turn to mud.

In The Torrent and Avian Lair I wanted to continue expressing the feel of land, sky, and/or water, but I also wanted to experiment with adding another media to transparent watercolor, so I drew in the little intricate lines and shapes with watercolor sticks. This allowed me to combine the looseness of watercolor brushwork with a drawing technique.
Abstract VII and Abstract VIII are oil pastels. I had never painted with oil pastels before I did these paintings. I did not have any particular theme or feeling in mind as I created these images. I was concerned only with creating interesting shapes and colors. I enjoyed how different oil pastels are to work with. I liked being able to build up color and then scratch out shapes and lines to reveal the color underneath. I look forward to doing more oil pastels.
