About Annette Ragone Hall

I grew up in Roanoke, Virginia, got married very young, at 19, had my daughter at age 23, and didn't pursue formal art training until age 25, when I started college. A couple of years after I graduated, my husband, daughter, and I moved from Virginia to the Pacific Northwest. Up until that time, most of my art was realistic, consisting of florals, still lifes, and landscapes, with a few portraits here and there. I had worked in acrylics and oils, and was just starting to try watercolor, but after moving to Washington State, I began to work almost exclusively in watercolor, a medium I had always thought to be one of the most challenging, and beautiful. I decided to switch gears and focus on the type of work I had always been drawn to, but had not explored very much—abstract and impressionistic images.

My previous experience painting realistic scenes had helped me to gain skill as a watercolorist, but had left me dissatisfied somehow. Moving to a brand new environment helped me see many things in a new way, and also freed my imagination. The Pacific Northwest's land of water and rugged mountains helped my creativity and imagination expand, and inspired me to create the kinds of non-representational images I truly enjoy painting. Each new image I created with this new awareness was just that, new. It did not look like anything which had previously existed in the world. That is what I want my work to be always original and unique, reflecting the influence of the natural world around me.

I've always loved bold, bright, jewel colors. My paintings reflect that feeling. Watercolor and acrylic are mediums that give artists the ability to be very free and bold in their work, if they're not afraid to be adventurous in their application of paint to paper.

My most recent series of paintings are abstract works which I've titled Life Glow. They are painted in watercolor or acrylic; some of these images include multimedia and/or collaged elements. I had worked primarily in watercolor for years, but a few years ago, I was introduced to Golden’s Acrylic Glazing Liquid at an art workshop. This medium extends the working time for acrylic paints and allows the artist to create beautiful transparent glazes. As a result, I've started to work in acrylics more and more. I'll never stop painting in watercolor, but I'm enjoying seeing what I can do with acrylics that I can't do with watercolor.

In 2007, to get back to a land of warmth and sun, and to the South, which is where we feel most at home, my husband I moved to Salisbury, North Carolina, where I was fortunate to be invited to share a space in Rail Walk Studios & Gallery, located in historic downtown Salisbury. I have felt welcome since the first day I came to Salisbury in January, looking for a house. It feels good to be “back home.” Moving to Salisbury has let me fulfill a lifelong dream of working as a full-time artist.

Now that I can devote full time to creating art, I plan to do more portraits because I’ve always been fascinated by the human face. In the past I’ve done a few portraits and was very pleased with the results, but didn’t have the time to focus on doing them on a regular basis because they require more preparation time than my other work does; if you’re doing a commission and don’t get the likeness, the client isn’t satisfied!

If you would like to see my work in person, contact me and Ill be happy to set up an appointment with you to come to my studio at Rail Walk Studios & Gallery.
